Is the JR Pass Worth It in 2026?
Usually not for a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip: that loop costs about ¥35,980 in regular tickets against ¥50,000 for a 7-day pass. The pass pays off when you add long legs such as Osaka–Hakata. From October 1, 2026 the 7-day pass rises to ¥53,000 for exchange orders bought at overseas agencies.

Three Itineraries, Priced with Official Fares
We priced three common 7-day routes with one-way ordinary reserved-seat fares from JR's own fare searches, on trains the pass covers:
- Golden Route (Narita ↔ Tokyo, Tokyo → Kyoto, Kyoto → Osaka, Osaka → Tokyo): tickets ¥35,980 — separate tickets are cheaper by about ¥14,020
- Golden Route + Osaka ↔ Hiroshima: tickets ¥56,820 — the pass saves about ¥6,820
- Golden Route + Osaka ↔ Hakata + Tokyo ↔ Kanazawa: tickets ¥95,740 — the pass saves about ¥45,740; with the October 2026 price, the pass saves about ¥42,740
The Nozomi Question
The pass does not cover Nozomi or Mizuho trains, the fastest services on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen. Pass holders can ride Hikari and Kodama trains at no extra cost, or buy a special NOZOMI/MIZUHO ticket for each ride — ¥4,960 between Tokyo and Kyoto. For comparison, a regular Tokyo–Kyoto ticket on the Hikari costs ¥13,850, and the trip takes about 154 minutes.
Regional Passes Can Be Better Value
If most of your travel is in one region, a regional pass usually costs far less than the nationwide pass:
- JR EAST PASS (JR East): 5 days ¥35,000, 10 days ¥50,000 — Not valid on the Tokaido Shinkansen.
- Hokuriku Arch Pass (JR East / JR West): 7 days ¥35,000 — Only for foreign visitors with "Temporary Visitor" status. Not valid on the Tokaido Shinkansen.
- Kansai Area Pass (JR West): 1 day ¥2,800, 2 days ¥4,800, 3 days ¥5,800, 4 days ¥7,000 — Sales end on 2026-09-30. Passes bought by then stay valid for their full period.
- Kansai WIDE Area Pass (JR West): 5 days ¥12,000
