Shinkansen Luggage Rules
On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, bags up to 160 cm (length + width + height) need no reservation. Bags of 161–250 cm need a reserved seat with an oversized baggage area, at no extra cost; without one you pay ¥1,000. Nothing over 250 cm is allowed.
Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen (Tokyo – Osaka – Hakata – Kagoshima)
These are the lines most tourists take between Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima. JR Central’s rules:
- Up to 160 cm in total: no reservation needed; keep it at your feet or on the overhead rack
- 161–250 cm ("oversized baggage"): reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area (the space behind the last row) or a seat with an oversized baggage compartment
- These seats cost the same as ordinary or Green Car reserved seats and can be booked at ticket offices, reserved-seat machines or online (for example smartEX)
- Board with oversized baggage without that reservation and you are charged a ¥1,000 baggage fee (tax included)
- Over 250 cm: not allowed on board
JR East Shinkansen (Tohoku, Hokkaido, Akita, Yamagata, Joetsu, Hokuriku)
JR East’s rules are different. You can bring up to 2 bags free, each up to 250 cm in total, 2 m long and 30 kg. Small personal items such as umbrellas and handbags do not count.
On these lines the luggage areas need no reservation: use any free space. You cannot reserve just the luggage space.
